Description
Height: 3′ – 4′
Sun requirements: Sun to part shade
Soil: Medium to Moist
For weeks in mid-summer, this low-growing, mound-shaped shrub is absolutely covered with bright yellow flowers that look like miniature fireworks, set off by finely textured, blue-green leaves. In the Arboretum’s gardens, this species and its larger cousin (below) are favorites with pollinators, including rusty-patched bumblebees. The seed capsules provide winter food for birds. It is a tough plant that looks especially beautiful in masses. St. John’s wort is resistant to deer and rabbits and is tolerant of black walnuts.
Pickup for woody plants will be UW Arboretum the week of May 11, 2026.
