Description
Height: 3′ – 4′ tall
Sun requirements: Full to partial
Soil: Medium-dry to moist
Shrubby St. John’s wort has all the plusses of Kalm’s St. John’s wort (above), but is larger, tolerates broader soil conditions, and can resistant drought when well established. Its tolerance of browsing comes from a natural toxic compound that deters herbivores, but this doesn’t bother the pollinators. You have to see (and hear) the bees it attracts to believe it! St. John’s wort species are also host plants for larvae of several butterflies and moths during their long bloom season (June to August). Don’t be without at least one species of St. John’s wort!
Pickup for woody plants will be at UW Arboretum the week of May 11, 2026.
