Bladdernut is found on floodplains and in forest understories. It is a multi-stemmed, upright shrub with striped bark that spreads by suckering, but is not aggressive. In spring, abundant clusters of pretty white, bell-like flowers attract pollinators. Bladdernut gets its common name from its unusual fruits that are papery, inflated seed pods. These fruits and the attractive bark provide winter interest. Bladdernut can tolerate black walnuts and spring flooding.
Pick up of woody plants will be at UW Arboretum the week of May 11, 2026.
