A medium-sized shrub that can form small colonies, black chokeberry is typically found in wetlands, but is easily grown in a wide range of conditions. In May, its clusters of white flowers attract bees, while the dark fruits resembling tiny apples feed birds later in the season. Its dark green, glossy summer foliage changes to gorgeous shades of red and orange in the fall. Chokeberry is an important host plant for larvae of butterflies and moths.
Pickup for woody plants will be at the UW Arboretum the week of May 11, 2026.
