American hazelnut is common in thickets and open woods and can be easily grown in the home landscape. It is a terrific plant for wildlife. The tasty nuts are enjoyed by humans if they can get to them before other animals do, because the nuts are beloved by squirrels, foxes, deer, and many birds. Its pendulous male catkins provide winter food for wildlife and the branches provide cover for birds, while the foliage hosts many lepidopteran larvae. Hazelnut is tolerant of black walnuts.
Pickup for woody plants in 2026 will be at UW Arboretum
